There weren’t many who could conjure up Nicklas Lidström.
But Peter Forsberg was no ordinary player.
Once completely humiliated “Foppa” his countryman – during one of the most beautiful goals of his career.
From 1996 to 2002, two of the world’s best hockey players were Swedish, and they also happened to play in two of the NHL’s greatest rivals. Peter Forsberg was one of the big stars of the Colorado Avalanche, and Nicklas Lidström was a key defender in the Detroit Red Wings.
The great rivalry
During those years in the late ’90s, Colorado and Detroit played each other five times in the playoffs, and more often than not, the games derailed completely. The two teams hated each other, and it was noticeable during the matches, where ugly slaps against star players were common.
And even though Peter Forsberg and Nicklas Lidström were both from Sweden, they weren’t exactly best friends. The rivalry between Detroit and Colorado was so deep that even Foppa and Lidas became enemies every time they met. But beyond all the hard tackles, ugly hits and all the trash talk, there was also high-quality hockey played, with some of the world’s best players in the main roles.
Fopp’s humiliating goal
One of the most memorable goals during Colorado and Detroit’s rivalry came from Peter Forsberg, and perhaps it was even more memorable for him considering who he spun into the stands just before. During his years in the NHL, Nicklas Lidström made himself known as a player who almost never made any mistakes. He was almost impossible to dribble away, and was even nicknamed “The Perfect Human” for his efforts on the ice.
But in one of the meetings against Colorado, Lidström could only watch while Peter Forsberg, who was then at the absolute peak of his career, broke into the goal with the puck and offered a tunnel before he got the puck into the goal with a backhand. In the long run, it’s safe to say that Lidström beat Forsberg, with four Stanley Cup titles to two. But the very special goal, and the tunnel on Lidström, will always be remembered as one of Forsberg’s most delicious in the NHL.
