Elections have not been held in Haiti since 2016. In recent years, criminal gangs have taken over about 80 percent of the country’s capital.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has promised 45 million dollars in aid to Haiti, which is plagued by violence.
Blinken, who is visiting Haiti, also called for more support for the security operation established to stabilize Haiti, as well as concrete steps towards elections.
Haiti has not held elections since 2016. The widening political vacuum has only exacerbated the country’s security and health crises. In recent years, criminal gangs have taken over about 80 percent of the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
Two months ago, an international police force led by Kenya arrived in the country, whose mission is to stabilize Port-au-Prince, among others. Blinken said during his visit that he plans to convene negotiations at the UN later this month to support the security operation in question.
