05/09/24 – 23:21 – Petkovic wins his bet

Despite strong criticism of him and a list of summoned players that has caused much debate, the Swiss coach of the Greens, Vladimir Petkovic, was able to put together the team he needed to manage this tricky match at the start of the CAN qualifiers. A very experienced eleven in all positions, except Hadjam on the left side of the defense, who for his part was willing, active and knew how to bring the permanent threat on his wing. The return of Mahrez to the heart of the game was interesting, but his contribution is largely improvable, especially in his choices in front of the surface.

05/09/24 – 23:11 – The summary

A laborious first act, a much more accomplished second, the Greens knew how to react after the break to take the upper hand on a team from Equatorial Guinea who had the merit of never closing the game. Until the opportunistic goal of Aouar (70th) after a shot on target from Mahrez, Algeria did not have much to get their teeth into apart from the poorly taken and missed penalty from their captain (26th). Bounedjah too isolated in front, did not know how to take advantage of his starting position. While Benrahma, generous and skillful in dribbling tried a lot without managing to unblock the situation.

This lack of lucidity in attack could have been punished just before the break by Salvador (45th), author of a diving shot brilliantly pushed back by Mandrea. Petkovic then had to put his players’ ideas in order and knew how to say the right words to provoke a reaction from his team. The 45,000 spectators at Miloud Hadefi were able to witness the metamorphosis of their selection after the break. More enterprising, more determined with constant threats on the goals of Owono who, in spite of himself, did what he could to push back the deadline.

After Aouar’s goal, the Fennecs experienced a slight let-up before missing two big chances from Benrahma (86th) and Benzia (94th). Amine Gouiri, who came on at the end of the match, was able to make the break by showing lucidity in a one-on-one at the end of added time (2-0, 96th). In the end, three deserved points and a reassuring victory for Algeria, who can start this qualifying campaign with full confidence. They will seek to confirm their initial success with a victory in Liberia next Monday.

05/09/24 – 22:59 – 96′ – Gouiri makes the break

The Stade Rennais striker comes face to face with Owono following a deep pass. He fixes the goalkeeper and manages to deceive him by crossing his shot ideally. 2-0 for the Greens

05/09/24 – 22:58 – 94′ – What a miss from Benzia

Yassine Benzia missed the easiest after a nice Algerian move. Alone on the left side in front of the empty goal, he opened his foot too much and saw the ball go wide.

05/09/24 – 22:56 – Obiang asks Mandrea

Obiang manages to arm a strike in the Fennecs’ area, Mandrea well placed, catches the leather without too much difficulty. The Algerian goalkeeper was very solid and vigilant on the rare opposing opportunities.

The Beninese referee of the match added six minutes of additional time in this second period.

05/09/24 – 22:54 – Yellow card for Ndong

For a sole on Attal next to the corner post, Ndong receives a yellow card in turn.

05/09/24 – 22:50 – 86′ – Benrahma misses the unmissable

Perfectly served in the area on the left side, Saïd Benrahma crosses his shot but sees Owono deflect the ball with his foot. Big missed opportunity to make the break

05/09/24 – 22:45 – 81′ – Benrahma’s tight shot

Saïd Benrahma tries his luck from afar but sees his shot go slightly wide of the opposing goal.

05/09/24 – 22:43 – 80′ – The Greens on the defensive

Since the opening goal, Vladimir Petkovic’s men have struggled to create clear chances and have let their opponents come. Only a few counterattacks have been noted, such as the one led by Benzia on the left side.
