Lord of the Flies by author William Goldings is a true classic of allegorical adventure literature. Since its publication in 1954, however, there have only been a short list of film adaptations. Now a four-part Lord of the Flies series is to be added.
While not much is known about the BBC’s British TV project, there is no need to worry about the soundtrack. It is said to be contributed by none other than Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer.
The Lord of the Flies as a series: Much more than just an island adventure
In Lord of the Flies * a group of prepubescent boys are stranded on a deserted island, where they build a new society based on their previous experiences in civilisation. However, the law of the jungle soon threatens to prevail, while the children’s innocence and humanity increasingly go down the drain.
According to Empire, the BBC is producing the four-part series in collaboration with Australian streamer Stan and has already started filming in Malaysia. Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials) is the head writer, with the script being directed by Marc Munden (Utopia).
The young cast consists of David McKenna as Piggy, Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack, Isaac Talbut as Simonl, Thomas Connor as Roger, Noah and Cassius Flemyng as twins Sam and Eric, Cornelius Brandreth as Maurice and Tom Page-Turner as Bill.
Previous adaptations of the dark adventure
Lord of the Flies has been made into a film a few times, although many more subjects have been influenced by the literary classic. The adaptations to date are:
A first potential film adaptation with girls was abandoned by Warner Bros. in 2017, but the concept inspired the survival series Yellowjackets. The most famous, however, may be the homage to the Simpsons episode The stupid Uno Club from season 9 of the animated series.
