Sixth Paralympic Games for Sandrine Martinet, who is aiming for a fifth medal in Paris.
Sandrine Martinet is taking part in her sixth Paralympic Games, twenty years after her thunderous debut in Athens in 2004. A silver medallist, she did it again four years later in Beijing with the same metal, this time with a bitter taste. Suffering from achromatopsia, Sandrine Martinet is visually impaired and practices para judo in the B2 classification. It was around the age of 12 that she discovered para judo, after having started judo a few years earlier.
The big favourite for the title in 2012, Sandrine Martinet had stirred up the entire crowd in the semi-final by deciding to finish her fight after breaking her ankle. She would take her revenge four years later by winning her first Paralympic title in Rio. At the last Games, Sandrine Martinet reached the final once again, before losing painfully. “It was the worst defeat of my career,” she declared. “I never wanted to see that final again.” Also a professional physiotherapist, Sandrine Martinet sees herself devoting herself fully to this profession, perhaps immediately after the Paris Games.
