THE FLOOD BILL WAS HEAVY
According to the news of the American Bloomberg news site based on South Korea-based TV Chosun, the cost of floods in North Korea was heavy.
According to the report, the North Korean government executed many government officials after many people lost their lives in floods in the north of the country at the end of July.
Between 20 and 30 regional government officials in the flood-hit area were executed last month, South Korea-based TV Chosun reported, citing an unnamed South Korean government official.
The channel reported that devastating floods may have killed several thousand people in the worst-hit area of Jagang province.
REFUSED TO COMMENT
A spokesman for South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said by phone that it was closely monitoring the situation after receiving intelligence about the developments.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles relations with the North, declined to comment on the matter.
HE EXPRESSED THAT THOSE RESPONSIBLE WILL BE PUNISHED
Kim Jong Un said at an emergency party meeting in late July that he would strictly punish those who “seriously neglect” their duties and are therefore responsible for the losses.
North Korea’s propaganda apparatus circulated photos of Kim overseeing rescue efforts following the disaster but did not report any deaths.
4,100 HOUSES WERE DAMAGED
According to North Korean state media, torrential rains damaged about 4,100 homes and destroyed roads and rail links.
Heavy rains destroyed about 3,000 hectares of farmland in the city of Sinuiju, a commercial hub linked to China by a bridge, and in nearby Uiju County.
The official Korean Central News Agency said about 5,000 people had been rescued.
