Geekom is taking advantage of the IFA show to unveil its Megamini G1, an ultra-compact PC with an original design, equipped with a powerful processor, real Nvidia graphics and an astonishing water cooling system.
The IFA, the big technology show in Berlin, is always an opportunity for manufacturers to present their latest innovations. And if the 2024 edition of the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (its full name) will open its doors to the public from September 6 to 10, some manufacturers do not hesitate to take the lead with announcements (see our article on the new Intel Core processors). This is the case of Geekom, which is taking advantage of the media coverage of the exhibition to launch a new computer not quite like the others, the Megamini G1. And the least we can say is that this model is likely to attract attention, at least for its very original design.
For those who don’t know yet, Geekom is a Chinese manufacturer specializing in mini PCs. Demonstrating quite remarkable dynamism, the manufacturer quickly distinguished itself on the market by the quality of its products, always carefully made, to the point of competing with well-established players like Beelink or Minisforum. In less than two years, it has considerably enriched its catalog with numerous miniature models built around Intel and AMD processors.
But for some time now, and to meet a growing demand, Geekom has also been very interested in computers for gamers. Machines that require very good computing power, and, above all, a very high-performance graphics circuit to comfortably run increasingly demanding games. It is for this purpose that the Mini Fun9 and Mini Fun11 were created, compact mini towers capable of carrying real graphics cards such as AMD Radeon RX 6xxx or Nvidia GeForce RTX 3xxx.
Geekom Megamini G1: a bold design and a real graphics card
But with the Megamini G1, Geekom decided to go much further. Of course, since it is still out of the question to integrate a latest generation graphics circuit into the tiny case of a real mini PC, this model was presented more as an ultra compact tower, about 5 cm high by 13 cm wide and deep. And the “beast” immediately catches the eye with its metal case, its transparent panels that reveal its components illuminated by colored LEDs (RGB), as gamers appreciate, and its small LCD screen displaying operating information (CPU load, temperature, memory occupation, etc.).
Beyond its looks, the Megamini G1 stands out for its components and connectivity, worthy of large gaming PCs. It thus includes an Intel i9-13900H processor (14 cores and 20 threads) associated with 32 GB of DDR5 RAM (64 GB maximum) and a fast SSD of 1 or 2 TB. Above all, this already very decent engine is supported by a real dedicated graphics card based on GeForce RTX 4060 with 8 GB of video memory. A high-end circuit capable of running the most demanding games of the moment. And everything is completed by a rich palette of connectors, with around fifteen sockets of all kinds (USB 4 and USB 3.2, 2.5 Gbit/s Ethernet, HDMI and even Oculink, a high-speed port mainly used for external graphics cards).
Another original feature, very spectacular: all the components are cooled by a water system (water cooling for Anglophiles) with exposed piping that looks great. Combined with two large fans, the system promises efficient and very quiet heat removal, with Geekom claiming a noise level of just 26 dBA for the water pump, which is remarkable.
Of course, we will have to wait for the results of in-depth tests to see what the Megamini G1 is really worth in a situation, with games or professional graphics applications, its other favorite domain. For the moment, this intriguing PC is not yet available. It is the subject of a collaborative subscription on Kickstarterat the special price of 1499 euros – its final price should be 1699 euros or more. It remains to be seen whether this PC unlike any other will be able to seduce the target audience.
