Last year, the number of reported fraud crimes increased by a whopping 21.9 percent compared to 2022, according to the police. At the same time calculated the police force’s national fraud centre that the criminal profits for fraud amounted to SEK 7.5 billion.

Several companies and authorities have warned
In 2024, the scams don’t seem to have abated. Instead, several companies and authorities – including DB Schenker, Ica Banken and the Tax Agency – have warned that fraudsters pretend to represent them in fake text messages and e-mails.
All in the hope of gaining the trust of the recipients and thereby gaining access to sensitive information.

Crypto Scam Warning
Now, on the Säkerhetskollen website, which is an initiative of the Swedish Theft Protection Association, a new warning has been issued. This time it is a scam text message.
“In recent days, many Swedish users have received text messages claiming to offer extra jobs. We therefore want to warn the public about an ongoing and very active fraud, known as crypto fraud, which aims to empty people’s bank accounts”, can be read on the site .

With fake phone numbers, fraudsters contact the victims via SMS and later the conversation is moved to, for example, Whatsapp.
“The aim of the scam is to ‘feed’ the victims with small profits to build trust before finally stealing everything and ‘butchering’ their finances aka ‘Pig Butchering’. This can be done by investing in cryptocurrency or similar.”
