In Greece, a real surprise was revealed from the bottom of the Mornos reservoir as a result of a severe drought, when the old ruins of a village called Kallio came to light for the first time since the 1970s. The lake is located more than 200 kilometers from Athens.
The news agency AFP and a British newspaper report about it The Guardian.
The more the water levels drop, the more submerged buildings appear.
In connection with the creation of the artificial lake, an estimated 80 buildings, including Kallio’s Evangelical Church and elementary school, remained under water.
People evicted from the village then received compensation and moved to Athens or other urban centers or uphill, where they formed a new community.
Deputy mayor of the village Kostas Koutsoumbas says that the water levels have dropped by no less than 40 meters this year and will probably drop even more.
– We haven’t seen anything like it since 1993, he said.
Greece has been hit by successive heat waves in recent years. This year, record-breaking heat has been experienced in June, July and August. As a result, water scarcity has become a major concern throughout the Mediterranean countries.
In addition to the heat, the water shortage is made worse by the large tourist crowds, which means that an ever-increasing number of people need scarce water.
