Volvo recalls five popular models – thousands are affected

It is the Dutch authority RDW that has discovered an error with the five popular Volvo models, reports We Car Owners.

This has resulted in a recall requiring owners of the affected models to take their car to a workshop.

Five Volvo models are affected

The problem concerns Volvo models S90, V90 and V90 Cross Country 30 April 2018 and 23 August 2020, as well as XC60 and XC90 built between 13 November 2017 and 12 May 2019.

More specifically, it concerns versions equipped with the same diesel engine.

During a random sample, RDW has discovered that the Volvo cars have too high emissions of nitrogen oxides, which means that they do not meet the legal requirements and must be remedied.

Too high emissions of nitrogen oxides were behind Volkswagen’s big emissions scandal a few years ago. The nitrogen oxides are toxic and also irritate both mucous membranes and airways.

Excessive emissions

RDW regularly carries out random tests on car models that have been approved by the authority.

– The recall applies to cars that are part of the same model family because they all have the same diesel engine, says Therese de Vroomen at RDW’s communications department to We Car Owners.

However, RDW does not reveal how much excessive nitrogen oxide emissions were in the cars in question.

So many cars are affected

Volvo Cars’ communications department confirms that it plans to launch such a software update, but that it has not yet taken such action.

More information about the recall will be released once the update is complete.

– In order to have full transparency towards our customers, we do not comment or speculate on the details before then, says Magnus Holst at Volvo Cars.

Up to 4,000 cars in Sweden can be covered by the update according to Vi Bilägare.
