Azerbaijan goes to the polls World News

In Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev decided to dissolve the National Assembly and hold parliamentary elections on September 1. Azerbaijani people went to the polls at 08:00 this morning.

ELECTION EXCITEMENT IN KARABAKH

Ballot boxes were set up in the regions that Azerbaijan liberated from Armenian occupation. Thus, for the first time in 30 years, parliamentary elections are being held in all of Azerbaijan’s territory.

More than 42,000 voters will cast their votes in Shusha, the symbolic city of Karabakh, Khankendi, Khojaly, Khojavend, Aghdere, Aghdam, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Zengilan, Gubadli, Lachin and Kelbajar, which were once the “capital” of the separatist Armenian government.

ELECTIONS BROUGHT UP BY 2 MONTHS

The National Assembly of Azerbaijan had appealed to President Ilham Aliyev to “dissolve the Assembly and bring forward the general elections scheduled for November by two months” as the country will host the Conference of the Parties (COP 29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on November 11-22.

President Aliyev had decided to dissolve the National Assembly and hold general elections on September 1.
