4 thriller highlights that no one should miss at the

In September, genre fans will get their money’s worth again at the Fantasy Filmfest 2024, where they can discover films that will only come to Germany later (or not at all) with regular releases. We want to shed light on 4 real thriller highlights in the program that no one should miss this year. Each of the films enriches the genre in its own way and gives you goosebumps and an adrenaline rush.

1. Horror thriller Speak No Evil: Successful remake with James McAvoy

Speak No Evil opens the Fantasy Filmfest in Berlin on September 4, 2024, more than two weeks before the horror thriller’s regular theatrical release. Even those who are normally skeptical about English-language remakes of European genre hits will get their money’s worth here. Because the remake of the shocking original from Denmark and the Netherlands leans into the creeping escalation with relish: This time the ominous holiday acquaintance between an American and an English couple. And if you found James McAvoy scary in Split, you should prepare yourself for a whole new level of horror in Speak No Evil.

2. Action thriller Kill: You won’t soon forget this train journey

Action fans who celebrate John Wick will get their money’s worth in the thriller Kill What initially begins as a romantic trip takes a surprising turn when several men robbed a moving train in India. Also on board, however, is elite soldier Amrit (Laksh Lalwani), who doesn’t want to simply leave the field to the ruthless gang. After Kill, no one needs to claim that convincing action thrillers need global settings, because it is precisely the confines of the packed train that make the tough fights (guaranteed not suitable for young people) an absolute experience.

3. Comedy thriller A Different Man: Identity abysses with Marvel star

As a rather unusual genre mix, A Different Man between dark humor and exciting identity exploration on the wrong path: Actor Edward suffers from his Facial Otherness and finally undergoes a radical operation. The real nightmare begins, however, when an old friend makes a film about his life and casts someone other than himself in the role. Sebastian Stan is allowed to show that there is more to him than Marvel’s Winter Soldier, but the real spotlight belongs to his “adversary”, who suddenly takes the path to fame that was previously denied to him. A unique thriller that holds up a mirror to ourselves.

4. Crime thriller Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In is a blast

The closing film of the Fantasy Filmfest is Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In by Hong Kong director Soi Cheang, who already disturbed audiences at the FFF with the serial killer film Limbo. This time he has grandiose fighting in mind, because Twilight of the Warriors offers the finest martial arts choreography in an unusual setting. The action film is set in the Kowloon Walled City, a lawless settlement on the outskirts of Hong Kong, from whose resurrection a lot is made in favor of the claustrophobic confinement and innovative fights. Two more parts of the crime series are already in the works. (JJ)

The Fantasy Filmfest starts on September 4th to 11th, 2024 in Berlin and then travels on to Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart (September 11th to 18th) as well as Frankfurt and Cologne (September 18th to 29th). The best way to find out when our four tips will be shown in your area is to check the program booklet.

Of our thriller recommendations, only the opening film, Speak No Evil, has had a German cinema release so far. It is not yet known whether or how all the other films will come to Germany.
