With its attractive prices, quality products and good deals, Lidl is one of the French people’s favourite brands, especially in these times of inflation! However, one black spot has always frustrated customers: the brand does not accept meal vouchers. However, this means of payment intended for the food of employees who do not have a company canteen allows them to eat at a lower cost and has now become essential for many French people. But after 35 years of resistance and numerous requests from its customers, Lidl has finally given in. As announced by the vice-president of Lidl France, Michel Biero, on BFMTV, the brand will allow its customers to pay for their food purchases with meal vouchers in its 1,600 supermarkets from September.

Lidl meal vouchers: paper format not affected

Michel Biero’s announcement on BFMTV marks a turning point for Lidl France. “It’s something we didn’t do before. We’ve never done it in 35 years.”he said, stressing “historical significance” of this decision. This is to respond to growing consumer demand and to win back customers who were turning to other brands that accept this payment method, in order to ease the burden on their wallets. Because, in an inflationary context, household purchasing power is being put to the test and meal vouchers represent a valuable support for many people.

Please note that only restaurant vouchers in card format or on a mobile application will be accepted at Lidl, with a selection of six authorized providers (Edenred, Swile, Bimpli, Pluxee, Sodexo and Up). As a reminder, they can be used on all food products since 2024, for a maximum ceiling of 25 euros per day. Beyond this amount, customers must pay the surplus with another authorized means of payment.

Lidl meal vouchers: a special offer for the launch

To celebrate the launch of this new payment system, Lidl will be offering a special offer from September 2 to 30. Customers will benefit from 10% of their purchase in meal vouchers paid back in the form of vouchers on the Lidl Plus loyalty card. For example, for a purchase of 50 euros, they will benefit from a voucher of 5 euros. This should be a strong argument against the competition and should attract new consumers!

However, some details remain to be clarified. Indeed, Lidl has not yet communicated the exact list of products that can be purchased with restaurant vouchers, given that each retailer is free to define their own list. We will therefore have to wait for the actual implementation of the system to know the precise terms and conditions at the distributor.
