Shortly after the accident, C. told the police: “I think I had my phone in my hand.” In the Utrecht court, however, he firmly claimed that his phone was in the cup holder sat, the holder you normally put your drink in. C., who speaks broken Dutch and is assisted by an interpreter, visibly struggles to tell his story. He regularly lets his head fall between his heavily tattooed arms. “I don’t remember much of the accident, the only thing I remember is that I didn’t see a red light,” he says.
