A large thunder and rainstorm moved in over Sweden on Thursday and it got really wet in several parts of the country. Elsewhere it was really hot – in Lund the thermometer showed 31.0 degrees.
SMHI issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in northwestern Götaland and parts of western Svealand during Thursday. Småland, especially Gislaved and Gnosjö, has been hit hard by the rainy weather on Thursday.
– It’s a full load for us. We have a lot of ongoing cases, says a management operator at the rescue service.
Several buildings have been water damaged and several roads flooded in Jönköping County. Both road 993 from Uppgränna to Narbäcken and road 153 from Smålandsstenar to Fållinge have been closed in both directions according to the Swedish Transport Administration.
In Stockholm, parts of public transport have stopped for periods as a result of the thunder, including the subway’s green line and the Lidingö line.
Even in eastern Sörmland, the weather caused problems. A lightning strike caused a fire in the forests outside Jönåker west of Nyköping, writes Sörmlands Nyheter. Due to the storm, the train service between Norrköping and Stockholm was canceled after a signal error which also occurred due to the storm, according to the newspaper.
But while the storm caused it for many, others were able to enjoy the high summer heat. In several places in Skåne, the thermometer reached the 30-degree mark.
In Lund, a 69-year-old heat record was broken.
– It has been 31 degrees there. It has not happened since 1955 that it has been this hot this late in the season, says SMHI’s on-duty meteorologist Petter Lind.
On Friday, many in eastern Svealand can expect rain showers.
