This statement once again highlights the diplomatic tension between Algiers and Bamako. On Monday, August 26, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions, Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, called from Geneva to “put an end to the violations of private armies used by certain countries.” The statement follows the drone strikes that killed 21 Malian civilians a few meters from the Algerian border in Tinzaouatène. “Those who pressed the button,” he declared, “are not accountable to any party.” And he called on the UN to impose sanctions against the perpetrators of these abuses. Algeria is raising its voice.
