The governments criticized scrapping premium so few have applied

It is now a week since the start of the government’s scrapping premium, which will get more motorists to switch to electric cars.

The premium entitles anyone who scraps their old car and buys an electric car to a bonus of SEK 10,000. The requirement is that the old car is inspected and has environmental class Euro 4 or earlier.

All about electric cars has been in contact with the Housing Authority, which administers the application process, to see how many people have so far benefited from the scrapping premium.

The government’s scrapping premium – so few have applied

The government’s scrapping premium has received criticism from several quarters, as many believe that it will not achieve the desired result.

Initially, it seems that the critics are right. During the first week, only eight applications were received for the scrapping premium.

“May be some delay”

According to the Swedish Companies Registration Office, however, it is still too early to draw any conclusions from the low number of applications.

– Since the scrap car must be scrapped and deregistered before the application is made, we think there may be a certain delay before we see how large the influx will be, comments Helena Svenssonlawyer at the Housing Agency, to All about electric cars.

It is thus possible that the number of applications will increase in the future, but the Housing Authority does not want to comment on how many applications it expects to receive in the long term.

Set aside 250 million

Eight applications so far mean only SEK 80,000 to pay out in scrapping premium after the first week that the application was open.

This can undoubtedly be afforded, as the government set aside a full 250 million kroner to be used for the purpose in 2024. That is enough for 25,000 applications.

They have budgeted for the same number of applications in 2025. Should there be more than 25,000 scrapping bonus applications in one year, some of the applicants will miss the chance for the bonus.

– The scrapping premium is given subject to funds. It is therefore not a rights support. Should the entire pot run out, the remaining applications must be rejected due to a lack of funds, says Helena Svensson to Allt om elbil.
