Two local initiatives that aim to restore the nature habitat are getting a boost from the provincial government.

The County of Brant is getting $194,380 in provincial funds to support its Paris Parks Enhancement Project. Grand River Employment and Training Inc. Is getting $62,530 for its Wetland Creation and Habitat Restoration project behind Kayanase Greenhouse at 973 Brant County Highway 54..
“Nobody understands the state of the environment better than local, dedicated community organizations and municipalities.” Brantford-Brant MPP Will Bouma said in announcing the funding on Monday. “Protecting waterways and green spaces ensures a healthier and more resilient community for generations to come.”
In Brant County, the funding will be used to plant more than 5,000 trees and shrubs, manage invasive species, enhance shorelines and trails, and improve natural lands to ensure the growing community has access to natural spaces.

The funding for Six Nations will restore the Grand River floodplain behind Kayanase through management of invasive species, riverbank restoration, pit and mound construction.
The work will also help create a breeding and/or spawning habitat for amphibians, fish, and turtles by creating a diverse wetland habitat that also supports species currently present.
“Restoration work, at all levels, along the Grand River is important to many communities,” said Six Nations elected council Chief Sherri-Lyn Hill.
She thanked the province for its support of Kayanase and the floodplain habitat restoration project.
The funding is being provided through the Ontario Community Environment Fund, which uses environmental penalties paid by polluters to support locally driven activities that protect and restore areas impacted by pollution or other environmental issues.
