“Metaphor: ReFantazio” sounds like it will take the strengths of Persona 5 and take them one step further. The new role-playing game will be released this year on Steam and for PS5.
What game is this about? “Metaphor: ReFantazio” is a JRPG from the developer Atlus. The game will be released on October 11, 2024 on Steam, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 4 and 5.
There is unrest in the United Kingdom of Euchronia: the king has been assassinated and a royal tournament is now being held to determine the succession to the throne. The protagonist must take part in this tournament to free the prince, who is believed to be dead, from a curse. He is accompanied by the fairy Gallica.
You can watch an official trailer for the game here:
What does the trailer show? In the race for the crown, you will compete against numerous rivals. To do this, you will win over the various inhabitants of the kingdom to your side. On your journey through the kingdom, you will defeat powerful enemies and cultivate relationships with your allies in order to successfully complete the task set before you.
High fantasy with a touch of “Game of Thrones”
What else do we know about the game? In terms of gameplay and staging, “Metaphor: ReFantazio” is very reminiscent of the Persona series. This is probably because some of the creative minds behind parts three to five are involved. Unlike the Persona series, however, players are transported to a medieval high fantasy world. This is inhabited by numerous, sometimes bizarre peoples and dangerous creatures.
A regicide, court intrigues and a “game” for the throne? You don’t have to look far to discover parallels to the TV series “Game of Thrones”. Atlus has now also realized that such a story is the perfect setting for a role-playing game that wants to present its players with important decisions.
Whether the game did itself a favor with its name is debatable. Nevertheless, the new role-playing game looks so good so far that even our MMORPG expert wants to spend a few hundred hours on it.
