Criticism of the government’s “golden road” to the climate goals: “Dirty gray and fossils”

By raising the reduction obligation from 6 to 10 percent, Sweden must meet the EU’s climate goals by 2030, according to the government. But that is questioned by the 2030 secretariat, which works for a fossil-independent transport sector and for Sweden to reach the goals.

– We need braces and belts in climate policy, the government does not have this. You need more powerful instruments than a couple of percent increase in the reduction obligation, says CEO Mattias Goldmann.

– We risk expensive fines, having to buy emission rights or a dead hand being placed on forestry and agriculture.

“Halfway at best”

According to the government, the proposal involves emission reductions of around 2.5 million tonnes by 2030. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s calculations, with decided and planned measures, there is still a deficit of at least 6 million tonnes to meet Sweden’s EU target of a 50 percent emission reduction by 2030, writes TT.

– We need to see the government’s calculations, but as we calculate, it is insufficient. Based on the government’s own figures, it is at best halfway enough to reach the climate goals, says Beatrice Rindevall, chair of the Nature Conservation Association, to SVT Nyheter.

The elevation is hollowed out

The new proposal also means that fuel suppliers must be able to include electricity from charging stations in their emission reductions, something that Mattias Goldmann believes undermines the figures.

– Now we get a leap forward that is smaller than what the numbers immediately suggest, he says.

– It is valuable to speed up the transition to electromobility, but if it comes at the expense of the transition to renewable fuels, then the climate is a loser.
