The classic chips are banned – after a name mistake

The classic chips are banned after a name mistake

Since April 2024, manufacturers must be able to ask for permission to use the word parmesan in the name of their products.

The reason is that the cheese has a protected designation of origin within the EU.

This was something that the Swedish company Gårdschips had missed.

Now Gårdschips is prohibited from selling parmesan flavored chips, something that Hallandsposten was the first to report on.

The classic taste of farm chips is prohibited

In the product description on the company’s website, it is stated that real Parmesan is used.

“Farm chips Parmesan here, we have not sacrificed anything and use real Parmesan in our seasoning, i.e. Parmigiano Reggiano.”, it can be read.

Now Laholm’s municipality has drawn attention to this and demands that Gårdschips stop selling its chips under the name “Parmesan”.

– From April you have to have a permit to be able to use the name parmesan of this particular variety they have, and they couldn’t show us that permit, says Annica Hegefeldtenvironmental manager in Laholm municipality, to Hallandsposten.

Farm chips: “Wrong decision”

The sales ban also entails a fine of SEK 5,000 per product sold.

At Gårdschips, they are not happy with the decision.

“Our comment right now is that we think it is a wrong decision and we will file an appeal”, writes Hanna Åhsberglocation manager at Gårdschips, to the newspaper.

According to Hallandsposten, the products that are already in stores will continue to be sold.
