Over the last 10 years, we have hardly had any really good disaster films. Deepwater Horizon and The Wave were exceptions. So the joy was all the greater in 2020 when Gerard Butler’s action film Greenland proved to be a A genuine end-of-the-world thriller to share in the excitement and sympathy turned out to be.
On 31 August 2024 Greenland leaves the Netflix catalog.

John hears of an alleged refuge, a Bunker in Greenland – hence the title of the film. He and his family embark on a dangerous journey. Not only do the comet fragments plunge the world into chaos, but the people around them also become more and more suspicious and panicked.
Realistic end of the world: Why Greenland is worth it
Greenland makes a virtue out of necessity: Shot with a reportedly paltry 35 million US dollars, the film avoids too much CGI destruction and uses interpersonal tensions in a dying world.
A comet breaks apart and a rain of comets pierces the earth. We have seen this from time to time and the film stirs up a primal fear of the end of the world. Many disaster films have exploited this in huge spectacles. What makes Greenland special is that it very close to Gerard Butler who neither has superhuman powers nor can fly into space.
Greenland is not a new 2012 and not a second Armageddon. In Greenland we don’t see an action hero saving the world, like Gerard Butler did in Geostorm. We see a family man stumbling through a dying world so that he and his loved ones can survive.

A sigh of relief for fans: Both Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin survive part 1 and are also in Greenland 2. The sequel is called Greenland: Migration and is already in production.
What is Greenland about: Migration? The comet rain is over and the survivors dare to leave the bunker in Greenland again. As the name of the sequel suggests, the remaining people must now search for suitable living environments. We follow the Garrity family again, this time in the harsh post-apocalypse.
Fans will also be pleased to know that the director of the first part, Ric Roman Waugh, is also directing Greenland 2. The film is expected to be released in theaters sometime in 2025. The exact date is not yet known.
