    On Monday, the world’s oldest living man celebrates his 112th birthday.

    British John Tinniswood was born in 1912, and has no idea why he has become so old.

    – I can’t think of any special secrets I have, he says Sky News.

    Tinniswood, who is the oldest World War II veteran, does not have a special diet to stay fresh – but does eat “fish and chips” every day, according to the newspaper.

  • Suspected radioactive bottles for recycling in Norrköping

    The police and emergency services have an ongoing operation at the recycling station Returpunkten in Norrköping.

    There, four bottles that have labels with the symbol of radioactivity have been found.

    – For safety’s sake, we have evacuated the facility. We have made a first measurement that did not result in radioactivity.

    They are now awaiting orders from MSB and the radiation safety authority on how to proceed.

    – This is not an everyday job for us, says Martin Olsson.

    The bottles are in a plastic tray inside a container.

    – Recycling does not have the permission or knowledge to handle this, so it is someone who wrongly put them there.

    The police are investigating the incident as a suspected environmental crime and causing danger to others.

    At 14.49 the emergency services were on their way from the scene. No measurements have shown radioactivity.

    Now the rescue service is said to have put the bottles in an old microwave, waiting for experts to take care of them.

  • Dummy bomb laid out in Kalmar

    The suspicious object that caused a major police operation in Kalmar on Sunday turned out to be a dummy bomb. The incident is now being investigated as a false alarm, reports P4 Kalmar.

    The alarm came from the public at lunchtime and led to an area being cordoned off and the National Bomb Squad being called there. Only in the evening were the restrictions lifted.

    – It takes a lot of resources from us. We are forced to prioritize other things that we would rather have done and which are much more important, and it also affects people’s mobility when we block off, says acting local police area chief Karl Ljungqvist to the radio.

  • Woman abused at recycling

    A 65-year-old woman was assaulted by a man at a recycling station in Dals-ed, at 8.42 on Monday morning.

    The man allegedly hit, kicked and pulled the woman by the hair.

    The woman is said to have a headache, the rest of the damage is unknown.

    The suspected perpetrator is unknown to the police.

    – The woman has left a description and some information to go on, but the man is still unknown to us, says Jens Andersson, press spokesperson at the police.

    The police have drawn up a report of assault.

    – The origin of the assault is unknown to me, says Jens Andersson.

  • Chinese military aircraft have violated Japan’s airspace

    A Chinese military aircraft allegedly violated Japan’s airspace, reports say NHK.

    According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, it is a reconnaissance plane that flew over the country’s southwest coast.

    Japanese fighter jets went up to intercept the plane which had managed to leave the area.

    It is the first time a Chinese military aircraft has violated Japan’s airspace, the news agency writes.

  • Crown Prince Haakon’s first words about the stepson: “Serious matter”

    For the first time, Crown Prince Haakon comments on the accusations against Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son Marius Borg Høiby, VG reports.

    – It is a serious matter, he says to the Norwegian press.

    Høiby is charged with assault, damage and threats after an incident in his girlfriend’s apartment in Frogner, on the night of August 4.

    The police found, among other things, a knife embedded in a wall and the girlfriend had visible injuries to her head.

    Høiby himself has admitted that he used violence and destroyed objects in the apartment under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.

  • Three stabbed at London festival

    A woman in her 30s is being treated for life-threatening injuries after being stabbed at Notting Hill Carnival in London on Sunday, reports Sky News.

    Two more people were stabbed and have unknown injuries – a man in his 30s and a man in his 25s.

    The abusers should not be related to each other.

    Police reportedly made 90 arrests and 15 officers were reportedly attacked during the festival, which was expected to attract around one million visitors in total, according to BBC.

    The police have been called to an apartment in Fisksätra because of a suspected bullet hole in an apartment door in an apartment building. This is what the police write on their website.

  • Man arrested after attempted murder in Vetlanda

    At 19.45 on Sunday evening, a man in his 30s was stabbed with a sharp object in Vetlanda.

    He had to be taken to hospital by ambulance and was assessed to be seriously injured.

    During the evening and night, a hunt for the suspected perpetrator has been underway.

    On Monday morning, the police announced that a man in his 20s had been arrested. He is now suspected of attempted murder.

  • The rescue service’s investigation into the Ocean fire completed

    In February, Liseberg’s new water world Oceana caught fire, killing a man who worked there.

    Now the Greater Gothenburg rescue service (RSG) has finished its accident and work environment investigation, where they state that the cooperation between the personnel at the construction site and the rescue personnel worked well.

    – Despite the tragic outcome, we can state in the investigation that the operation was carried out efficiently and in accordance with RSG’s instructions and guidelines. Unpredictable events can always occur during a rescue operation, but our staff handled the situation in the best possible way, says Göran Kallin, accident investigator, in a press release.

    The rescue service’s investigation does not cover the cause of the fire, which is instead being investigated by other authorities.

  • At least 22 people killed in Pakistan

    Gunmen on a highway have killed at least 22 people in southwestern Pakistan.

    The victims are said to have been forced out of their vehicles before being shot to death, reports among others BBC.

    The attack, which took place in Balochistan province, where security forces are battling sectarian, ethnic and separatist violence, was said to have targeted people from the Punjab region.

    A separatist group in Baluchistan, which is banned in the country, previously urged people to stay off the highways, AP writes.

  • Two boys injured – buried on beach in Denmark

    Two German boys, aged nine and twelve, have been seriously injured after a landslide on the coast of northwestern Jutland, reports several Danish media.

    The boys were reportedly building a cave when large amounts of sand collapsed and buried them.

    The condition of the boys’ injuries is currently unclear, but according to the emergency services, the situation was “urgent” when they were flown to hospital. The boys’ families were also flown to the hospital.

  • Major fire in London – over 200 firefighters on site

    A building in Dagenham, in east London, caught fire during the night of Monday, reports Sky News.

    Over 200 firefighters have rushed to the scene. Several people, including children, have had to evacuate and two people have been taken to hospital.

    “The fire is causing heavy smoke and we urge residents in the area to close windows and doors,” station commander Alan Bendell told the news agency.

    There must be residences and business activities in the building, which is known to have “several fire risks” according to the emergency services.

    The building is undergoing a facade renovation on the fifth and sixth floors, where the fire broke out. But it is still unclear what caused it.

  • Man dies after electric scooter accident

    A 35-year-old man has died after an accident between an electric scooter and a car in Uddevalla, reports Bohuslänningen.

    The accident happened a week ago, on the night of Sunday, August 18. Now the police announce that the man, who received serious injuries after the accident, has died. His next of kin have been notified.

    The police are investigating the incident.

    – As it looks now initially, and it may change, it is the electric scooter that has broken. But then there are aspects with the light signals at the scene of the accident that we have to take into account, says Jenny Johansson at the police traffic unit in Vänersborg to the newspaper.
