Ryan Reynolds explains why only his character in Deadpool & Wolverine is allowed to appeal to the audience

Ryan Reynolds explains why only his character in Deadpool

In addition to anarchic humor and completely disrespectful treatment of its own comic roots, the Deadpool series has established another trademark: breaking the fourth wall. This is a technique from the theater in which the play is loosened up and the audience is addressed directly.

As our international sister site AdoroCinema reports, Ryan Reynolds revealed on the occasion of the Deadpool & Wolverine launch why this approach will continue to be left only to his character.

Only Deadpool is allowed to break the fourth wall in his franchise

In the Vanity Fair interview, the Deadpool actor explained that the gimmick of breaking the fourth wall remain a special feature and therefore should not be used by multiple figures:

There are rules. Very specific rules. It would lessen the impact if everyone – or just one other person – was also aware of the fourth wall or some sort of meta aspect. Deadpool is the only character who has this ability.

For Reynolds, it is important that character traits are clearly defined and then kept unique:

If everyone did that, you wouldn’t invest as much in that character. You really want to believe that the villain is a villain. You really want to believe that your co-star’s character is believable too. Deadpool can back that up – and does back that up – because you don’t want the audience to take him so seriously.

Will there be another part of the Marvel series after Deadpool & Wolverine?

The latest installment in the series has already grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, so it would be very surprising if the Deadpool franchise were not continued in the future.

Another film is not yet officially announced It is also still unclear whether Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine.
