High water flows – several groups rescued from mountains in Sarek and Kebnekasie

It started on Friday evening when a group tried to cross a watercourse in Kebnekaisefjällen but the water flow was too high.

– There are very high water flows right now. In streams you normally step over, it is now really fast and really deep, says Anders Bergwall, mountain rescuer in the Kiruna area.

Around the same time, two people reported being lost in Sarek. The helicopter was then unable to take off due to bad weather, but on Saturday they were picked up wet and chilled.

Later, Fjällrädningen had to pick up two more companies in the Sarek area.

A lot of rain and high water flows have meant that the last week has been intense for the mountain rescuers in Norrbotten.

– We have had rescues every day. Quite large complex rescues that went on all night.

But even before the last week, the number of mountain rescues this summer was high in the statistics.

– So far there have been 40 rescues this summer and that is high, although not an “all time high”, says mountain rescuer Anders Bergwall.
