Two tunnels, one in Gothenburg and one in Stockholm, are among the stretches where the most speeders are caught by speed cameras. Here are the ten speed cameras that caught the most speeders in the country.
– We know that motorists drive an average of 8 to 10 kilometers slower on roads where there are speed cameras, says Trafikverket’s press manager, Bengt Olsson.
During the first half of the year, the country’s speed cameras caught a total of 202,215 speeding offenders. But there are big differences in the risk of being caught by speed cameras along our roads. It shows numbers that the police produced for TV4 Nyheterna.
Most speeders have gone there on the stretch between Bräckemotet and Eriksbergsmotet in the Lundbytunnel in Gothenburg, with 1477 registered speeders, according to the figures. The route also topped the list last year.
In second place in the country is the section between the Nyboda and Lugnet interchanges in Södra länken in Stockholm.
– We know that motorists drive an average of 8 to 10 kilometers slower on roads where there are speed cameras, says Bengt Olsson.
At the same time, the least number of motorists have been caught by speed cameras along the stretch between Dämbol and Bettna outside Norrköping. Only 17 speeding offenders have gone there.
– The aim is not to catch speeding offenders, says the Swedish Transport Administration’s press manager Bengt Olsson to TV4 Nyheterna.
Saves lives annually
In 2006, there were 644 speed cameras in the country when the modern camera made its entrance in Sweden at highway 50 near Askersund.
Today, there are a total of 2,500 cameras in the country, which annually save 20 lives, and prevent 70 people from being seriously injured in traffic, according to the Swedish Transport Administration.
– Increased speed compliance is an important parameter to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries in traffic if the system of traffic safety cameras contributes to it, says Eva Lundberg, National coordinator for traffic safety cameras at the Swedish Transport Administration.
According to the authority’s measurements, fatal accidents are reduced by 20–30 percent on stretches with speed cameras. The measurements also show that only five percent drive over the speed limit at the cameras.
The Swedish Transport Agency’s surveys show that close to 75 percent of Swedes have a positive attitude towards traffic safety cameras.
