(Finance) – The August 24, 2016 marked the beginning of a devastating seismic sequence which hit Central Italy hard, creating a crater of 8,000 square kilometers between Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche and Umbria, involving 138 municipalities. Eight years after the event, the Extraordinary Commissioner for Reconstruction, Guido Castelli, stresses the need to remember the victims and to acknowledge the delays that have accumulated. However, the last two years have seen a significant acceleration in private and public reconstructionwith more than 31,000 requests for contributions for a value of 14.5 billion euros.
In the Marche they concentrate more than half of the questions, followed by Abruzzo, Umbria and Lazio. At the same time, disbursements by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (Cdp) reached record levels, demonstrating an increase in efficiency in reconstruction operations.
Among the villages that are symbols of the tragedy, Amatrice, Arquata del Tronto and Accumoli are the protagonists of innovative reconstruction projects. In Amatrice, the “super construction site” of the historic center sees the integration of public and private interventions, while Arquata del Tronto has become a model of post-earthquake engineering with the reconstruction of its historic center. In Accumoli, the recent approval of the Special Ordinance represents a crucial step for the rebirth of the village.
The Councillor for Reconstruction Policies of the Lazio Region, Manuela Rinaldihighlights the importance of a recovery that respects thehistorical identity of placeswhile Commissioner Castelli emphasizes the collaboration between institutions and the adoption of advanced technologies to guarantee the safety and future of these tormented territories.
