Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is choosing to skip the presidential election and support Donald Trump, Pennsylvania court documents say, according to the AP.
In a speech during Friday evening, he says that he is withdrawing from ten key states, but that his name will be on the ballot in several others.
– In my heart, I no longer believe that I have a realistic path to electoral victory, Kennedy Jr. said.
In his speech, Kennedy Jr. thanked his volunteers and his staff.
– You all showed that democracy is still possible here, says Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy Jr. also criticized the electoral system, the media and the debate, saying that he would have done better in a different system.
– I think I would have won the election then, says Kennedy.
However, he will remain on the ballot in several states, but says he has withdrawn in ten key states. Documents from a court in Pennsylvania seen by the AP news agency show that he withdrew from the state.
Criticizes the Democrats’ focus on Trump
The former independent candidate also chose to strongly criticize his former party and their focus on Republican candidate Donald Trump.
– Who needs politics, when you can hate Trump?, says Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, has previously said that they considered supporting Donald Trump in the presidential election, but that it was not a given or an easy choice. There was a risk that Kennedy’s campaign would steal votes from Trump and favor Harris, according to Shanahan.
– Because we would take votes from Trump, or even get more votes than Trump, she says in the podcast Impact theory.
Earlier this week, Trump praised Kennedy Jr., and said that it might be possible for him to take a seat in a future government.
