Norwegian mockery of Sweden after Petter Northug’s unexpected announcement – when he now tackles the impossible: “If he were Swedish…”

Imagine if Petter Northug were Swedish instead.
That is what the Norwegians are now speculating in a cheeky mockery of Sweden.
When 38-year-old Northug bets on reaching the World Ski Championships in Trondheim.

2018 ended Peter Northug his successful skiing career, a skiing king bid farewell to his throne. But he couldn’t leave cross-country skiing for that and started competing in long-distance races just two years later.

Northug’s message

Today he is 38 years old and that competitive drive is still pumping within him. Before the coming ski season, Northug has decided to invest in traditional cross-country skiing again, and the big goal is to enter the World Cup and get to go to the World Ski Championships in Trondheim in 2025.

The article continues below.

But it is a very long way to get there and if you ask him himself, the chance is 2.2 percent that he will reach the world elite again.
– All the parameters are working against me, says Northug to NRK and opens up about the difficulties in the fall of age.
– It’s absolutely too damned. You feel rotten, old and sluggish. The mobility you had in your 20s, unfortunately, you don’t remember what it was like. And when you remember, everything feels really rubbish.

“Very difficult”

In order to reach the WC on home ground, Northug must first of all qualify for the Scandinavian Cup. If he succeeds in performing well there, he gets to go on to the World Cup, and if it also goes well there – then a place in the Norwegian World Cup squad may become relevant.

But the competition is brutal within the Norwegian cross country team and especially on the men’s side. Countryman and long-distance legend Anders Aukland does not have high hopes for Northug’s WC chances at all.
– The fact that Petter is Norwegian and is not in the national team means that the eye of the needle to get to the WC will realistically be very difficult to get through, says Aukland to NRK.

The mockery of Sweden

Then the Norwegian sends a very clear and equally acidic taunt to Sweden.
– If he were Swedish, he would have been on the starting line in the WC.

Petter Northug dominated cross-country skiing at his very best and changed the sport with his incredible sprinting ability. He won two individual Olympic golds and seven individual World Cup golds, as well as the overall World Cup twice and the Tour de Ski once.
