It has almost been a week since Boden runner Johan Lingbro, 47, was killed during the first competition day of the Björkliden arctic mountain marathon (Bamm). He died after falling on steep terrain in severe weather conditions.
Security must be tightened
Already now, the competition management has started to look ahead to how, and what measures can be taken to further increase security for future editions.
– I dare not say exactly what it will lead to here and now, but there are definitely measures that we believe can make the arrangement even safer, says Per Jonsson Öhlin.
17-year-old died in an accident in 2012
All provided that there will be more competitions. It is something that Per Jonsson Öhlin is keeping open until further notice.
Last weekend’s accident is not the first with a fatal outcome in Bamm. In 2012, a 17-year-old Luleå resident died when he fell into a steep ravine in the Abisko area the day before the start of the competition.
Per Jonsson Öhlin has only read about that incident in the media.
– But you have to be aware that we are moving in uncharted territory and there will always be a human factor, he says.
