the Chancellor of the Exchequer weakened by the tax situation

Akshata Murty, wife of UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, does not pay tax in the UK. Daughter of an Indian billionaire, she lives in Downing Street with her husband, but is not officially domiciled in England. This allows him to not be taxed.

Breathtaking hypocrisy. For the leader of the main opposition party in England, this revelation comes at the wrong time.

The British are indeed hit by a record rise in the cost of living: increase in the electricity bill, taxes also… An announcement by Rishi Sunak, precisely.

His wife Akshata Murty, is the daughter of the founder of Infosys, a highly rated technology giant in India and the United States. She owns a little less than 1% of shares in the company, which allowed her to receive last year almost 14 million euros in dividends.

She therefore did not need to pay any tax, because she kept her Indian nationality and remains officially domiciled in India. A situation that Rishi Sunak has never hidden from the government or the Treasury, and which is not illegal.

It is in fact the result of a rule that dates back to colonial times, and which allows a British resident wealthy abroad to declare an address in another country.

Not outlaw therefore, but embarrassing for the minister, who is currently struggling to defend himself. He compared himself to Will Smith at the Oscars, and said, ” We both had our wives attacked. But I didn’t slap anyone. »
