Walz at the party convention: “Never underestimate a teacher”

It was star-studded at the Democrats’ party convention on Wednesday night.

The lectern was taken by, among others, ex-president Bill Clinton and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. Even Motown legend Stevie Wonder visited the convention and both spoke and sang.

The jubilation reached new heights when television personality Oprah Winfrey suddenly took the stage and, in a sort of sermon, paid tribute to presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her home country.

“The greatest honor of my life”

The focus of the third day of the party convention, however, was vice-presidential candidate and Minnesota governor Tim Walz, who changed the scene to a standing ovation.

– It is the greatest honor of my life to accept the nomination for vice president, Tim Walz began and was greeted by cheers.

Walz continued the speech about growing up in the small rural town of Butte, Nebraska, and spoke about the importance of respecting one’s neighbor regardless of political color.

– They may not think, pray and love like you, but they are your neighbors and you take care of each other, said Walz.

“Never underestimate a teacher”

In particular, Tim Walz received a lot of applause and cheers when he told about when he chose to run for Congress.

– There I was – a teacher in her 40s with small children, no political experience and no money, running in a very Republican area. But you know what – never underestimate a teacher.

Walz also spent parts of the speech criticizing Republicans.

– While other states banned books in the schools, we banned hunger in our schools, Walz said, to cheers and applause.

That Kamala Harris chose Tim Walz as vice presidential candidate came as something of a surprise a couple of weeks ago. Since then, the party’s strategists have praised the 60-year-old’s popularity as well as his background as a geography teacher, congressman and National Guardsman.
