Randy Pitchford is the boss of Gearbox Software. The development studio is currently working on Borderlands 4. But the studio boss is struggling with another problem. A statement he made 5 years ago on Steam has now caused many users to make fun of him.
What did Randy Pitchford do? The CEO of Gearbox is currently under fire for trying to whitewash the flopped Borderlands movie. This is now being compounded by a tweet he posted 5 years ago.
Pitchford believed at the time that the Epic Games Store would drive competitor Steam out of the market. He predicted in 2019 that Steam would be a dying store in 5 or 10 years.
The reason for this: Epic Games would invest more in technology. In addition, the quality of the service would be better.
At the moment, however, it doesn’t look like Steam will disappear anytime soon. Last year, a record-breaking 13,971 games were released on the platform. The total revenue from game sales on Steam even doubled from 2019 to 2023. The malicious response from fans was therefore not long in coming.
Gearbox is currently working on Borderlands 4. The game was announced at ONL 2024:
Borderlands 4 is coming to Epic Games Store and Steam
What is the reaction of the fans? Gearbox released their hit Borderlands 3 exclusively on the Epic Games Store. But Borderlands 4, which was just announced at Opening Night Live 2024, is now coming to both Epic Games and Steam.
Accordingly, many users are currently gathering under Pitchford’s 5-year-old tweet, making fun of the statement. Many have dug up Randy Pitchford’s statement and are now confronting him with the fact that the Epic Games Store is a minority compared to Steam (via X).
