A star of How I Met Your Mother was miserable

The sudden success of a series can catapult its stars from unknown faces to global stars almost overnight. In Jason Segel’s case, it was the sitcom How I Met Your Mother that helped him land a whole series of roles. But the situation has overwhelmed him quite a bit.

Jason Segel was very unhappy during How I Met Your Mother

At a Hollywood Reporter roundtable, Jason Segel sat down with other comedians to talk about their Experiences in business as well as the highs and lows their careers and their personal lives. During the conversation, Segel explained how it felt to move from comedy to other genres and how difficult it was to build on the initial success.

It was particularly hard for Segel when his series How I Met Your Mother was at the height of his popularity. During this time he was able to land leading roles in big comedies such as Never Again or The Muppets, but it made him anything but happy:

There was a period in my life and career, around the last few years of How I Met Your Mother, when things were going well in both film and television, and everyone told me how good things were going and I was really unhappy.

It was difficult for Segel to understand why his success made him unhappy:

So I had to deal with the why. What’s wrong with this equation? Because I was supposed to feel like I had made it… and something wasn’t right.

In his search for an answer, he returned to a topic that had already been discussed at the table. Acting is ultimately about self-discovery. Segel had lost sight of her during How I Met Your Mother and had to put a lot of work into finding her again.
