The top player in the men’s world ranking in tennis Jannik Sinner gave a positive doping sample twice last March, but the Italian star survived the incident without a suspension.

Klostebol, which is an anabolic steroid, was found in Sinner’s doping samples. ITIA, the body that oversees the ethics of tennis, took the case to an independent judicial body for decision, which found Sinner innocent of the doping violation.

The jury found that a prohibited substance accidentally entered Sinner’s body when the physiotherapist had treated the wound on the Italian player’s finger. The physiotherapist had not used gloves to treat the wound.

– Jannik has cooperated fully since the beginning of the investigation conducted by ITIA. ITIA fights abuses in our sport and especially doping. Its rules and processes are exceptionally strict, and after a judicial investigation and an independent hearing, the judicial body has found Jannik not guilty. He is not guilty, Sinner’s representatives stated in their press release.

The doping samples automatically brought Sinner a temporary ban, but Sinner’s appeals were accepted both times.

Sinner gave his first positive test on March 10 during the Masters tournament in Indian Wells and the second one eight days later before the Masters tournament in Miami, which the Italian won. Sinner was allowed to keep his Miami tournament victory, but the Italian’s results from Indian Wells were rejected. Sinner, who advanced to the semifinals in Indian Wells, lost his ATP points and prize money.

Sinner, 23, is the No. 1 seed in men’s singles at the US Open, which starts next week. The Italian won the Australian Open at the beginning of the year. Earlier this week, he picked up a tournament win at the Masters tournament in Cincinnati.
