The shipwreck occurred on the night of Saturday to Sunday, August 18, on the Lukenie River, in the territory of Kutu, province of Mai-Ndombe (southwest). A whaling boat heading towards Nioki carrying about 300 people and goods on board was shipwrecked. So far, only about twenty bodies have been recovered and more than a hundred are still missing.
