A former Republican representative removed from the US House of Representatives in December 2023 George Santos pleaded guilty on Monday to fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Santos reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors just weeks before his trial was set to begin.

Santos admitted he let his ambition cloud his judgement. The former Republican representative said he takes responsibility for his crimes and plans to make amends.

Santos is waiting by NBC News including a prison sentence of at least two years. In addition, he will have to pay over $373,000 in restitution.

The verdict is scheduled for February 7.

The US House of Representatives voted 311-114 to impeach Santos last December.
