Ilmari Reunamäki and Jenny Matikainen have been chosen as ‘s new correspondents. Both will start their positions during the fall.
has been appointed as the new US correspondent Ilmari Reunamäki. He will start in Washington in October.
Reunamäki has worked in ‘s international delivery since 2022. The United States has been part of his special expertise even before his career at Yleisradio.
Reunamäki’s interest in the United States was awakened at a young age through American popular culture. He focused his studies at the University of Tampere on the history of the United States and completed his student exchange in Chicago.
Reunamäki has also completed internships at the Embassy of Finland in Washington and the Embassy of the United States in Helsinki.
– I am really excited about this task. The election campaign in the United States is accelerating, and even in the Finnish debate, you can notice that interest in the country is increasing.
Due to the presidential elections coming up at the end of autumn, Reunamäki starts his position at an exciting time.
– There is a big political divide in the country, and therefore it is difficult to know what will happen during the elections and how the country will continue to move forward after that. It doesn’t help but to jump directly into the eye of the storm and see what happens, Reunamäki estimates.
Reunamäki hopes that he could tell about the lives of Americans in a versatile way and avoid stereotypes.
– I hope to find surprising perspectives that break the dividing line between urban liberals and rural conservatives. I feel that my task is to find as many new and interesting perspectives as possible.
Former Asian correspondent for the Nordic countries
has been chosen as the new Nordic correspondent Jenny Matikainen. He will start his position in Stockholm at the beginning of September.
Matikainen has worked in Yleisradio’s foreign distribution for more than ten years. He gained previous experience as a correspondent between 2017 and 2020, when he worked as ‘s Asian correspondent in Beijing.
In the last few years, Matikainen has been doing the Miasa maila pahuuu podcast.
Matikainen says that he is looking forward to washing with enthusiasm, even though a new task in a new country feels exciting at the same time.
– China is a relatively unknown country to Finns, while Sweden and the other Nordic countries are very familiar. Therefore, this wash was more exciting than the previous correspondence.
Matikainen feels it is his mission to find new, surprising and interesting things in Sweden as well.
– The Nordic countries are very similar and face the same challenges as in Finland. For example, it is interesting to see what kind of solutions different countries have found for familiar challenges.
– It’s great to get back on the field properly. I have missed meeting new people on a daily basis.
Matikainen hopes that in the coming years he will be able to tell Finns as versatile as possible how the big decisions made in the Nordic countries affect the everyday life of ordinary citizens.
