Jannik Sinner’s victory in the semifinals of the ATP tournament tasted great after a difficult few weeks.
Number one in the men’s world rankings in tennis Jannik Sinner got to enjoy a rare treat for him when the Italian player defeated Germany Alexander Zverev 7-6 (11-9), 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) at the Cincinnati ATP Masters and advanced to the final. Sinner had beaten Zverev last time four years ago and lost four straight meetings since then.
The job on the night before Monday was demanding on Finland’s time. The match lasted more than three hours, if only the time spent on the field is taken into account. Due to the breaks caused by the rain, the total time was much longer.
– This was a tough and very exciting match. We played in different conditions: the sun was shining, it was raining and then it was still evening. I am very happy with how I was able to play and made it to the final, Sinner described his mood.
Mentally strong
Sinner’s last few weeks have been difficult. The Italian, plagued by illness, lost to the Russian in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon grand slam tournament to Daniil Medvedev and eventually had to withdraw from the Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis. At the ATP Masters tournament in Montreal, Sinner won two matches and then lost to the Russian To Andrei Rublev.
In Cincinnati, the game has started to flow. The reason is when the last grand slam tournament of the season, the US Open, approaches.
– I could not have played a better match than this as part of the preparation, Sinner praised the challenge offered by Zverev.
– If I’m going to win even bigger matches, I have to be in even better shape. Today I was mentally strong. I’m proud of that.
Before the US Open, there is still the packaging of the Cincinnati tournament in the final match, where Sinner will face the host country of the United States Frances Tiafoe. He is the first American in the Cincinnati men’s singles final since 2013, when John Isner lost to Spain For Rafael Nadal.
