In the final mountain stage Alpe d’Huez, five cyclists were in contention for overall victory. With 53 kilometers to go, on the penultimate climb, Demi Vollering made an attack and Niewiadoma could not respond.

– For a moment I lost hope that I could do it, they were shouting so much on the radio during the last kilometers, says the winner.

With ten kilometers to go, the Pole’s overall lead was only ten seconds. The reigning champion Vollering gave everything and took home the stage victory, but as fourth in the finish, Katarzyna Niewiadoma barely managed to keep out of the overall.

– To be honest, the climb was really terrible for me. I hated everything so to get to the finish line and find out I had won was unbelievable.

Four seconds is the smallest margin of victory in Tour de France history, in 1989 American Greg LeMond won eight seconds ahead of Laurent Fignon.

Two Swedish women competed in this year’s edition of the Tour de France Femmes, Caroline Andersson finished in 34th place overall and Emilia Fahlin ended up in 101st place.
