Requirement for charging poles from the EU – at least one per parking lot

All shops, churches, arenas and community facilities in the EU that have more than 20 parking spaces must install at least one charging point for electric cars. It must be done before 1 January 2025.
ICA trader Peter Kassman in Örnsköldsvik had no idea about this until a few days ago – and is critical that the information was so lacking.

A new EU law states that all commercial buildings, such as shops and churches, which have a parking lot with more than 20 parking spaces, must have at least one charging point for electric cars. Peter Kassman in Örnsköldsvik believes that many missed the new law and he thinks that the information has been bad.

– I found out about this by accident a few days ago and now I only have a few months left.

– It is under all criticism, he says.

The basis of the law is that non-residential buildings must have a better energy performance and according to the Housing Authority, everyone affected by the law has had several years to absorb the information.

– Everyone who has a business in a building has a responsibility to find out which rules and laws apply. The EU directive came in 2020, so they have had many years to implement this, says Anders Johansson, fire engineer at the Housing Authority.

A minimum level

The law does not require more from those who have large parking lots. If there are several thousand parking spaces, a single charging pole is enough to comply with the law.

– The EU has set a minimum level, but of course you can set up more charging stations and you hope that the market will take care of some, says Anders Johansson.

For the ICA dealer in Örnsköldsvik, it is now necessary to get asphalt paver, excavators and electricians who can arrange for the post to be in place by the end of the year, but he does not yet know what it will cost.

– We have only been working on this for two days, so I have not received any answers yet. But I also see it as an investment going forward, says Peter Kassman.
