Large volcanic eruption after the earthquake off Russia

A large volcanic eruption has occurred after the strong earthquake off Russia.
The quake had a magnitude of 7.0.
According to the Russian state-controlled news agency Tass, the ash clouds from the eruption have risen up to eight kilometers above sea level.

It was in the sea off the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia that the powerful earthquake occurred on Sunday morning local time. The quake had a magnitude of 7.0 and the US National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning. That warning was later withdrawn.

– The earthquake is quite close to the coast, a couple of miles outside and Petropavlovsk is nine miles away, so it may have shaken a bit there, says seismologist Björn Lund to TV4 Nyheterna.

Volcanic eruption after the earthquake

Following the earthquake, the Shiveluch volcano in easternmost Russia has erupted, reports the Russian state-controlled news agency Tass.

According to the news agency, the ash clouds from the eruption have risen to eight kilometers above sea level. At the moment, there should be no information about damage to people or buildings that collapsed as a result of the incident.

In connection with the volcanic eruption, a red warning for air traffic has been issued for that area. Several aftershocks were recorded, but of lower magnitude.
