Relocated CornTogether fundraiser a hit

Now in its second year, a local cornhole fundraiser had teams square off in a new location.

CornTogether, held in support of ComeTogetherCK, took place at Sons of Kent Thursday afternoon, with more than 45 teams registered.

“Couldn’t have been more excited about the response this year,” organizer Brent Wilken said.

While last year’s inaugural event at Kingston Park had a strong showing, he said cornhole is more of a backyard pastime, with players often found with a beer in hand.

Wilken said the decision was made to pivot to the Chatham brewery.

“It’s a more fitting vibe for what the soul of cornhole is,” he said, adding that it’s still accessible for people.

Two hundred people were involved in constructing and painting the various cornhole boards, with more than 30 volunteers helping out the day of the event.

Proceeds will go toward the non-profit organization’s ongoing operations.

Last year’s event raised about $7,000. Though there isn’t a fundraising goal, Wilken said it had doubled that amount this time.

ComeTogetherCK, which organizes initiatives such as The Gift, now operates out of its Given Road facility.

Josh Andari, who runs the summer job works for Community Living Chatham-Kent, said the organization was happy to help with the cornhole event, including making some of the boards.

He said 11 students aged 15 to 21 took part, with the program focusing on community interaction, meeting new people and working in a hands-on environment.

“It’s a good chance for our kids to be able to practice a lot of different skills,” he said.
