A man who was fishing found the bones at the end of July in Zaporizhia.

Mammoth bones have been found in the Zaporizhia region of Ukraine, reports say Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne and news agency Ukrinform.

The discovery was made by someone who was fishing on the Dnieper River Kostyantyn Nelipa at the end of July. The bones were on the riverbed. They had become visible after the water level had lowered.

Nelipa says she thought the bones were stones at first.

According to an expert assessment, it is apparently the bones of a woolly mammoth, which are about 10,000 years old.

Mammoth bones have been found in the area before.
