Captivating fantasy film in which Blake Lively hides an unimaginable

Netflix recently released a modern fairy tale starring Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) and Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) that all fantasy fans should catch up on. While Blake Lively is currently enjoying success in the cinema as a florist in It Ends with Us, she accidentally achieves immortality in The Age of Adaline.

In The Age of Adaline, Blake Lively is 107 years old

As a result of a strange accident, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) stops aging at the age of 29. This experience has – literally – lifelong consequences: Adaline is pursued by the FBI and from now on is forced to change her identity and location every 10 years. Only her daughter Flemming knows about Adaline’s secret.

At the age of 107, Adaline meets a man named Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman). Despite initial doubts she enters into a romantic relationship with himAdaline and Ellis are happy – until Adaline discovers that Ellis’ father William (Harrison Ford) Jones is her former boyfriend. In accordance with her rule of not getting romantically involved, she had left William without saying a word.

On Netflix: Blake Lively shines and we are thrilled until the last minute

The film skilfully balances fantasy, fairytale romance and drama and offers an original love story whose outcome seems uncertain for a long time. With a slight wink, an unusual love story spanning a century is told and mixes bittersweet and playful elements. The theme of age shaming is also charmingly turned on its head when Adaline desperately longs for her first grey hair.

The Age of Adaline succeeds in adding a refreshing touch to the overloaded genre of the romance film. The fantastic starting point of the story serves as a successful metaphor: Adaline may shine with eternal youth and beauty, but she is forced to remain stuck in one and the same phase of life forever. Despite constant moving, Adaline has no real opportunity for change. She cannot confide in anyone and cannot get involved with anyone seriously.

The nuanced performances of Blake Lively and Harrison Ford ensure that you follow Adaline’s unusual life path from the first to the last scene. The Age of Adaline is one of the few examples of the romance genre where the audience is actually not sure whether there will be a happy ending until the very end.
