At least 80 dead in attack in Sudan

The attack took place on Thursday in Jalgini village in Sennar state.

– Three military vehicles attacked Jalgini. The residents resisted, which led to the attackers retreating, to later return with several vehicles, a local resident, whose son was injured in the attack, told AFP.

– They opened fire, set fire to houses and killed many people, says the man, who does not want to give his name.

The paramilitary group RSF (Rapid support forces), which has been at war with Sudan’s government forces since April 2023, captured Sennar’s state capital Sinja in June. Since then, around 726,000 people have been forced to flee, according to the UN migration agency IOM.

In an attempt to bring about a truce in the civil war, talks were opened in Switzerland led by the United States and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. However, the Sudanese army has so far refused to participate.

Both sides have been accused of brutal war crimes, including deliberately targeting civilians, indiscriminately shelling residential areas and blocking humanitarian aid.

The war in Sudan is described as the world’s biggest humanitarian disaster and has forced ten million people to flee.
