In 1988, the horror comedy Beetlejuice gave Tim Burton, who was just starting out in his career, his big breakthrough. Around 36 years later, the cult director is now ready to make the sequel Beetlejuice, bringing Michael Keaton back to the big screen in the role of the iconic ghost.
The decision to make a sequel after all these years is something we owe to Burton’s Hit series Wednesdaywhich stormed the Netflix charts in 2022.

As Burton explained in an interview with Total Film, Wednesday brought the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory director back to his roots:
Wednesday reminded me why I like creating things. It was like shooting a movie on a TV schedule. It was invigorating. We had no plans to make a sequel [zu Beetlejuice] This was before people talked about franchises. The first time I heard that was with Batman Returns. It sent a shiver down my spine.

While filming Wednesday, he thought back to the beginnings of his career, which he experienced together with Beetlejuice character Lydia Deetz and her then 15-year-old actress Winona Ryder:
There was something emotional that made me want to do a sequel. Something about this character and what happens to people 35 years later. That was the emotional anchor for me. What happens to people as they get older? You go through different things. You have children. It changes you. In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) is the mother of teenager Astrid (Jenna Ortega), who watches her mother’s television show, “The Haunted House with Lydia Deetz,” with skepticism. The death of Lydia’s father and Astrid’s grandfather Charles Deetz eventually brings the family back to Winter River, where Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) is still causing havoc.
