Womens football pioneer Ulf Bergquist has died

Bergquist won four SM golds as a coach, was for a year the national team captain of Sweden’s women’s national team and for several years was general secretary of what is now called Elite Soccer Women.

He began his coaching career in Öxabäcks IF in 1975 and it ended with SM gold immediately after victory in the final on penalties against Jakobsberg. In 1979, Bergquist was the national team captain for the women’s national team before he temporarily stepped down in favor of a civilian career as a manager at Ello’s department store, the newspaper writes.

In the second half of the 1980s, he returned to elite football and won two SM golds and two cup golds with Öxabäck before being recruited to Malmö FF for a fourth SM gold in 1990.

After that, Ulf Bergquist was club director in the Scanian big club for almost ten years.
