The message, issued Wednesday, was directed to people who have received a tattoo from an unnamed provider in the last six months in the Bothwell area.

“Based on the information currently available, the tattoo services were likely provided in or near Bothwell,” officials said in a release.

“Community members who have received (such) a tattoo service. . . are potentially at risk of contracting a bloodborne infection, including HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.”

Affected people should call CK Public Health at 519-355-1071, ext. 2902, as soon as possible, as testing and/or treatment may be recommended. Individuals also can contact their primary health-care provider.

When considering a tattoo service, residents are encouraged to confirm the business is inspected by the local public health authority and complies with infection prevention and control legislation and best practices.

According to the public health website, personal services are those where there is risk of infection spread by exposure to blood, such as hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and HIV. They also may infect skin and nails with fungus or bacteria.

Such services range from hairstyling, shaving and barbering to waxing, manicures and pedicures, piercing, aesthetic services, acupuncture and tattooing, the website says.
