We are burning inside due to extreme heat and we are turning to ice-cold teas and fizzy drinks. Because they refresh us but the danger is great. There are 10 cubes of sugar in 1 can of iced tea or fizzy drink.

Increased sugar consumption in extreme heat is raising a danger alarm. The danger is great not only in sugary drinks but also in drinks labeled “sugar-free” on market shelves.

Speaking to Atv Main News, Timur Erk, the President of the Turkish Kidney Foundation, said, “The World Health Organization (WHO) says 13 cubes of sugar equal 50 grams. If that’s the limit, then we have to comply with it, but Turkey is third in the world and first in Europe in this regard, so there is a problem.”

Istanbul Medical School Internal Medicine Specialist Hümeyra Şahin said, “There is also 39 grams of sugar in 1 can of acidic beverage. So, if we consider that we consume this several times a day, if we consume ready-made beverages and sugary beverages, we are exceeding the amount recommended by the World Health Organization. Sugary beverages primarily damage oral and dental health. They can cause weight gain, obesity, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Sugar-free beverages also contain sweeteners. This also has many different side effects. This damages both the metabolism and other organs. In any case, the consumption rate may increase because it is sugar-free and calorie-free. Therefore, we are more exposed to its harms and additives.”
